A curious thing I've noticed.

I took that picture thinking it’d be helpful, but what you can’t see is that the radar detector is going batshit saying that I’m being hit by laser. I noticed I was getting a lot of these LIDAR alerts lately from really, really well hidden cops. Then I noticed a pattern. Today I tested and confirmed my theory that it must be some kind of military navigation or weapons system. If I sit here like I am the detector goes off over and over again — it doesn’t stay steadily lit up. My theory is that they’re using some kind of sweeping light beam for navigation, but I really have no clue. Anybody know what it is?

One style of ship radar is a rotating beam

Hence why in movies you get the sweep radar screen, cause it updates in a circle.

James may does a good cover on how radar works.

That’s all I could think of would be on at all times sweeping across like that.

I’m thinking something more utilitarian and less dramatic like markers or security light beams or maybe some sort of scanner that’s sitting there running and reading bar codes on passing containers. Something mundane and repetitive like that.

LiDAR - Light Detecting and Ranging. Same principle as radar, but with a beam of light. The cops use a point-and-shoot setup that’s really hard to defeat since they target individual cars like a rifle. It usually isn’t in the visible spectrum, so you don’t see a sweep of light like in a light show.
